Areas of Need

Special educational needs and disabilities are broadly categorised into four key areas:

Communication and Interaction – How well the child communicates and interacts with others

Cognition and Learning – How well the child learns and thinks

Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties – How well the child’s mental health, emotions, and social skills are

Sensory and/or Physical Needs – How well the child’s physical needs and senses are

The Learning Support department offers a range of support bases and specific interventions to address specific difficulties:

Communication and Interaction Base

Autism base area (e.g. environmental and sensory checklists; quiet areas; mentoring; transition support)

Speech and Language interventions (e.g. Language Link)

Communication and Interaction interventions (e.g. Zones of Regulation; Talkabout for Teenagers)

Cognition and Learning Base

Long-term alternative curriculum

Cognition and Learning interventions (e.g. IDL; spelling; reading interventions; handwriting; homework support)
